US Messes With Nicaragua
Elections
Sandinista National Liberation
Front (FSLN) General Secretary
Daniel Ortega denounced Friday
that the US is manipulating in
the OAS to prevent the people ó
s triumph in the next Nicaraguan
elections.
In its attempt to hinder the
victory of the Sandinista
National Liberation Front,
Washington, traditionally allied
to the country ó s most
conservative sectors, has also
intensified its open
interference in the process,
Ortega explained.
In addition to extending its
media campaign to delegitimitize
the electoral process, the US
has given a document to
Organization of American States
Managua representative Gustavo
Fernandez, which was apparently
drawn up by US citizen John
Negroponte, he affirmed.
The document denigrates the
National Electoral Council,
describes the elections as
flawed, and accuses the FSLN of
fraud, Ortega expostulated.
The presidential candidate,
leading the polls, warned that
the battle would be difficult
but that the vote count would
have the last word. He expressed
his confidence in victory and
said the transparence of
elections should be corroborated
by participant attorneys instead
of imposed observers.
Meanwhile, Ortega confirmed he
traveled to Cuba to express his
solidarity with President Fidel
Castro and the Cuban people, and
called to multiply efforts in
the battle against the unjust
imprisonment of the five Cuban
antiterrorist fighters.
