El Salvador to Send Troops to
Iraq
El Salvador President Elias
Antonio Saca handed the national
flag to a batch of soldiers who
will leave for Iraq on Sunday,
irrespective of mounting
criticism of this move.
The flag was received by Col.
Joaquin Galvez Molina at the
Artillery Brigade in San Juan
Opico, La Libertad.
After the government
announcement, social and
political organizations, such as
the Farabundo Marti National
Liberation Front, condemned the
decision because they maintain
the Bush-led war on Iraq is
illegal.
The forces making up the 7th
Cuscatlan Battalion will be
deployed in Al Kut, Wasit
Province, where two soldiers of
a military contingent of their
nation were killed in July.
Their deaths triggered
demonstrations against the
deployment of Salvadorian forces
in Iraq, under the pretext of
only carrying out humanitarian
tasks.
Salvador is the only Latin
American country with troops in
Iraq. It replaces them in groups
of 380 every six months
