Chavez Starts Race with Rally
Followers of Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez are
readying Thursday a mass
mobilization to support the head
of state in the presentation of
his candidacy for a new tenure.
The ceremony to make Chavez s
candidacy official for the
December 3 presidential
elections will be held on August
11.
Wednesday, the opposition
elected Zulia Governor Manuel
Rosales as the only candidate of
several parties than include
Primero Justicia (Justice First)
and COPEI.
Rosales leads his own Un Nuevo
Tiempo party, A New Era, and
began his electoral campaign
promising the distribution of
part of the oil incomes among
all Venezuelans.
Chavez is buttressed by his
Movimiento Quinta República
(Fifth Republic Movement),
Patria para Todos, (Homeland for
All), Podemos and the Communist
parties as well as social bodies
that back the government policy
he has been implementing.
Poll results estimate the
statesman s vote intentions at
55 percent although his campaign
coordinators say it could climb
to 70-80 percent.
Most observers coincided that
Chavez s popularity is founded
on the betterment brought by
ongoing social programs to
provide the people with free
education and health, fight
poverty and eradicate
unemployment.
Those missions, financed with
resources of hydrocarbons
exports, are benefiting by first
time millions of poor
Venezuelans.
