Brazilian congress recommends
firing 72 lawmakers with
wrongdoings
A Brazilian congressional
committee investigating
ambulance purchase scandal
approved on Thursday a
preliminary report which
recommends firing the 72
congressmen allegedly in
connection with the case.
According to the committee's
charges, Planam, a local
ambulance retailer, bribed the
72 congressmen to include in the
Federal Government's annual
budget the purchase of
overpriced ambulances through
fixed bidding processes. The
scandal became public in early
May.
Local press called the
legislators, 69 federal
representatives and three
federal senators, participating
in the scheme as the Mafia of
Leeches.
However, as the House of
Representatives will not vote on
the case before the Oct. 4
elections, the exclusion may
practically coincide with the
end of the congressmen's term.
