Higher Fuel Prices Today
If you didn't fill up yesterday,
today you will be paying ¢22
colones more for a litre of
super gasoline, ¢23 colones more
for regular and ¢03 colones more
for diesel, as at the stroke of
midnight, gasoline retailers
changed the prices at the pumps
following the publication of the
increase in the official
government publication, La
Gaceta.
The approval for the price
increase was given last week by
the Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep), but
did not come into effect until
today.
Unusually, the lines at the
gasoline pumps were not long at
all. At various gasoline
stations ICR visited last night,
there were no lines at all and
the ELF station on Paseo Colón
there was no sign of a coming
price increase.
The attendant at the ELF station
told us that Ticos were now used
to the constant price increase
and saw no rush to fill the tank
as has been the custom in
previous increases.
Another factor could also be
that payday is not until the
15th and this time around
shopping for a Mother's Day gift
was more a priority that to fill
the tank.
with today's increase, a litre
of super gasoline jumped to ¢597
(us$1.16), regular to ¢573
(us$1.11) and diesel to ¢383
(us$0.74).
The Middle East crisis is a
contributing factor to the high
prices, as Israel continues to
pound Lebanon and the
uncertainty of Iran and its
policy on atomic weapons. Add to
that the news from British
Petroleum (BP) of shutting down
a pipeline in Alaska due to
corrosion. BP says it will use
its total financial and manpower
resources to replace a 16 mile
section of the pipeline over the
next couple of months.
