Panama Banana Growers Demand US
Chiquita Brand
The US transnational company
Chiquita s decision of cutting
banana purchases is provoking
Tuesday strong losses for
independent Panamanian growers,
who are suing the enterprise end
its monopoly.
According to authorities, since
the reduction of purchases two
weeks ago, banana growers lost
some $400,000, which represented
some 110,000 crates of that
fruit.
The US Company announced Monday
a new cut of 30-percent on
purchases, with the excuse of a
saturation in the European
market.
Faced with this situation,
banana workers unions threatened
to block the company if they do
not free the contract of
exclusivity and allow them to
sell bananas to other traders.
These unions requested executive
participation in the dispute to
avoid larger losses.
