President Arias is Confident of
a Colombia With Peace
Costa Rican president, Oscar
Arias Sanchez, was in Colombia
yesterday to witness the
inauguration of Colombian
president Alvaro Uribe's second
term and to take the opportunity
to insist that the Colombian
president move quickly to
concrete the negotiations with
the FARC, moving Colombia closer
to peace.
Arias, a Nobel Peace prize
winner, was asked by a group of
ex-militaries to be part of the
peace negotiations that many
Colombians are now asking for
and want.
Uribe, in his second term, is
looking to dialogue with the
"guerilla Colombiana" in the
process to bring peace to a
country that has been mired in
internal conflict for more than
40 years.
"It looks like that during his
first time he (Uribe) made
security a priority and it has
resulted in success. A good part
of the guerilla that occupied
some of the smaller areas, has
been corralled. Now, it is a
time to talk peace", said Arias.
Arias added that the Colombian
guerilla is not longer as active
as in the past and especially
now that the Colombian has
modernized and strengthened its
democratic system and more
important that it has a
President who has the will to
talk peace.
