Protest Outside Israel's Embassy
Some 50 people, armed with
banners and flags concentrated
in front of Israel's Embassy on
Paseo Colón yesterday to
denounce the war in Lebanon. The
Israeli Embassy in located
inside the Centro Colón
building, along with a number of
other embassies, including the
British Embassy.
"We are here to raise our voices
demanding a stop to the Israeli
armed conflict against the Arab
and Islamic people", said Gómez,
one of the protestors
representing the Central General
de Trabajadores.
A number of Muslim community
leaders were among the
protestors who are calling
Israel's actions barbaric and
criminal. "We cannot allow more
deaths" were the words of Luis
Jesús Mora, who made the call to
president Oscar Arias to tell
the Israeli to leave the
Lebanese in peace.
Some of the shouts overheard
from the crowd included the
"negligence" on the part of the
Nobel Prize winner who leads
Costa Rica (referring to
president Aria) and an insult
that he (Arias) would he would
meet and get involved in the
Colombian peace talks but quiet
on the Middle East situation.
Shouts of "genocide" by the
Israelis were heard and
according to Muslim Mora, the
actitude of Costa Rica in the
Middle East conflict is one of
disinterest, as protestors
burned the Israeli flag, while a
group of Fuerza Pública (police)
officials stood by to control
the crowd.
The entrance to Centro Colón was
closed off, traffic on Paseo
Colón was disrupted for a time,
but the protest ended without
incident.
