Income Gap Grew in 16 years
The income gap between employed
Costa Rican men and women
increased between 1988 and 2004
(the most recent actual data
available).
While in 1988 men’s
income for their work was 32
percent higher than that for
women, the figure reached an
overwhelming 55 percent in 2004.
The gap increased in almost all
categories in which men and
women have similar education and
on-the-job experience.
The only
groups in which the gap narrowed
were those including university
graduates, 18 to 24 years old,
and among those 60 or older with
only elementary and high school
studies.
