Panama's Anti Corruption first
prosecutor Mercedes De León
requested to bring to trial
several ex officials for
possible participation in
terrorist Luis Posada Carriles´
illegal departure from the
country.
De Leon asked for the opening of
a criminal trial against ex
minister of Justice Arnulfo
Escalona, ex National Police
Chief Carlos Bares, and ex
Migration Deputy Javier Tapia,
La Prensa daily reported on
Wednesday.
The decision was taken after a
comprehensive investigation
requested by Panama's Twelfth
Penal Court.
According to the daily, the
prosecutor declared the accused
free of evasion charges, but
only provisionally.
Posada Carriles and three of his
accomplices were arrested in
Panama when they were planning
an assassination attempt against
Cuban President Fidel Castro,
during the Ibero American Summit
held in this Central American
country in 2000.
A few days before the end of her
government, ex Panamanian
President Mireya Moscoso
pardoned the terrorists, who
left Panama with the support of
her administration officials.
