Honduras Muses Anti-Protest Bill
Honduran President Manuel Zelaya
sent a bill to Congress
Wednesday that establishes
sentences of up to five years
for participants in protests
that cause “alterations in
traffic”.
Although sanctions already exist
in this regard they are not
executed and the Legislature was
called to session to study the
initiative in detail, opposition
PN-National Party congressman
Juan Orlando Hernandez told
press.
The measure is contradictory
because Zelaya supported a
strike on September 2005 by taxi
drivers, who demanded reduction
of the high price of fuel.
Monday, the president asserted
the law would imprison those who
block roads and bridges and “are
identified by two witness,
videos or tapes.”
Since the wee hours of this
morning, the Honduran capital
has been under tension due to a
demonstration by thousands of
teachers from all over the
country demanding salary
increases.
