Canal Referendum in Five Steps
The manager of the Panama Canal
Authority (ACP), Alberto Aleman
Zubieta, told journalists
Tuesday that the first of five
steps to achieve a national
referendum on planned widening
of the Canal has been presented.
That 80-page Extension Project
document will then be sent to
the Cabinet, with approval
certain as the government is in
favour of the project.
The final goal will be the
referendum, expected at the end
of this year, for which the
Electoral Court will allocate
7.8 million dollars.
The ACP manager said the country
will not go into debt with the
6.25 billion dollar investment
to widen the Canal because the
funds will come from tolls paid
for using the Canal, and he
believes users will understand
the need to increase tolls.
"Those who use the Canal knows
that its widening will mean more
benefits for all" he concluded.
