Nicaraguan Docs Starve for
Decent Salary
Three Nicaraguan doctors
ratified they would continue the
pro-salary hunger strike they
started Tuesday, although the
Executive has not signalled if
it will meet their complaints.
Doctors Silvio Zamora and Omar
Herrera and psychiatrist
Santiago del Palacio said they
will carry the fasting to the
logical conclusion to push a
solution to the sector´s
demands.
The Medical Federation, which
groups 3,000 physicians, wants a
30 percent pay raise apart from
the 13.25 percent given by
authorities in January.
However, President Enrique
Bolaños´ administration warned
it will only give a 16.75
percent increase, which when
added to the figure given at the
beginning of the year, would
complete the demand.
The hunger strike is the last
option used by Nicaraguan
doctors, who are considered the
worst paid in Central America.
Meanwhile, neither outpatient
visits nor operations scheduled
for the national health network
have been carried out for five
months.
