Faithful Call for Removal of
Alcoholic Priest
A number of residents of the
area known as La Unión have made
a call to Monseñor Hugo
Barrantes to remove their local
priest, Marco Hugo Castro Mora,
from the Nuestra Señora del
Pilar church, for being a drunk.
Castro has been a priest at the
Tres Rios (east of San José)
parish for some 11 years and
while many churchgoers are happy
with the priest, some continue
to complain of the priests
indiscretions, especially in the
way he handles alcohol.
Henry Rodríguez is one resident
who formed a group to
demonstrate in front of the
church yesterday, which was calm
and full of prayers for the end
of the problem.
Barrantes assures parishioners
that he has spoken with the
Castro and there is no need to
to move him. "When I am invited
to someone's home I am offered a
drink and I accept as a good
gesture, not to offend", said
Castro.
However, Rodríguez and his group
say that the priest had similar
problems in Desemparados and Los
Angeles de Heredia parishes and
will be pushing hard for
Castro's removal.
