Rican May Be
First Man On
Mars, Chang Tells Young
"Being in space is an
extraordinary feeling; I
recommend it to you. Somebody
like you could be the first
person to walk on Mars; a young
Costa Rican could be the first
one," former NASA astronaut
Franklin Chang told Andres Orue,
13, who had asked Dr. Chang what
it was like to be in space.
Chang talked to 400 high school
students in a lecture on the
importance of the participation
of young people in the
development of technology.
The scientist took advantage of
the enthusiasm of the students
to remind them that next July
his laboratory in Liberia,
Guanacaste, will start
operating, with the aim of
developing a plasma engine for
space craft and of transforming
medical waste materials into
energy.
