General
Cañas Highway Closed Tonight For
Bridge Construction
The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad
and Productos de Concreto
announced the closure of the
General Cañas highway - the main
route to and from the airport
and San José - in front of the
Real Cariari mall beginning at
8pm tonight (April 1) until 6am
Sunday morning.
The closure is to allow workers
to erect the arch of the
pedestrian bridge that is under
construction in front of the
Cariari mall.
Traffic into San José will be
rerouted to the side road in
front of the Herrardura and
Cariari hotels, while traffic to
the airport will re-routed at
the Conservatorio Castella and
onto the old Heredia road which
follows back onto the Genaral
Cañas past the Cariari mall.
Best bet is to avoid the area
altogether or use the Heredia
route from San José or Belen
route from Escazú.
The bridge construction is
expected to be finished by June
1, when construction on a
similar bridge a few hundred
metres away on the same highway,
at the Residencial Los Arcos,
begins.
The bridges will hopefully
eliminate the mad dash across
the busiest highway in Costa
Rica, pedestrians have been
accustomed to to cross the
street. A number of deaths have
been recorded at both points
where the bridges are being
constructed.
The same type of pedestrian
bridges are being planned for
the Florencio del Castillo (Cartago)
and PPróspero Fernández (Escazú)
highways and the Circunvalación.
