Colombian constitutional court
to debate on presidential
re-election
The Constitutional Court of
Colombia will open debate
Tuesday on whether President
Alvaro Uribe should be allowed
to run for re-election, the
court announced Sunday.
The announcement came after
president of the Constitutional
Court, Manuel Jose Cepeda, said
last week that they had received
19 demands against the decision
by the congress to give Uribe
the green light to run for
re-election in 2006.
Uribe cannot seek a second term
under Colombian law, but the
congress approved a bill last
November to lift the ban.
Cepeda said judges of the
Constitutional Court would study
the 19 papers in their first
meeting. The court has the
deadline of Nov. 5 for its
decision on the re-election law.
Its approval will be final for
the issue of re-election.
