President Pacheco Told To
Tighten His Belt and Face His
Fears on the TLC
President Abel Pacheco should
tighten his belt and face his
fears according to Partido
Movimiento Libertario (ML),
Carlos Salazar, who is calling
on the president to face his
fears to the growing opposition
to the Tratado de Libre Comercio
(TLC) - free trade agremenet
with the United States.
"If the people take to the
streets for the sending of the
TLC to Congress, the president
should not be scared and bring
order to Costa Rica", said
Salazar.
Salazar added that, "He
(Pacheco) was elected to make
the decisions necessary for the
country, and thus should defeat
his fears against the unions and
drive us down the road to
development."
President Pacheco is now facing
the decision to either send the
TLC to the Legislative Assembly
or sit on it, waiting out the
end of his term (May of 2006)
and let the new president take
it from there.
The recommendations by the
Comisión de Notables last Friday
gave him no clear cut path.
The president told the press on
Friday that he would make his
opinion known today (Tuesday)
taking the weekend to study in
depth the 66 page report by the
Notables, headed by astronaut
Franklin Chang.
For their part, union leaders
are calling for protests and
work stoppages if the TLC is
sent to Congress. For the
time being the threats by the
union have calmed, waiting on
the Presidential decision, but
union leaders vow to heat things
up again if the President makes
the decision to move forward
with the TLC.
