CORBANA Doubts EU Banana Consensus
The director of Legal issues with Corporación Bananera Naciónal (national banana corporation) CORBANA in Costa Rica, Mariano Jiménez, thinks that the proposed import tariff does not have the full support of all European countries, which would oblige another definition of the rate.

Germany, which is a large consumer of bananas, estimates that the tariff is still very restrictive and therefore could vote against it.

Jiménez also estimates that Sweden, Estonia, Malta, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Denmark and the Czech republic could all join the German line.

The present presidency of the EU however, does want a general approval of this project during the coming week.

CORBANA is a public non-governmental body, created by national law in 1971. It has been designated as the regulatory body of the Costa Rican banana industry, and its mission is to “serve national producers”. Its share capital is made up, in equal parts, by the central Government, the three state banks and the country’s banana producers, who have voting rights.
