Train Collides With Bus;
Driver Failed Signals
The "tren urbano" - commuter
train - began operating the
first week in October, the only
incident reported was the mishap
between a taxi and the train in
the first hours of operations.
Yesterday, the first major
accident involving a train
occurred, leaving 26 persons
injured, four serious enough to
be taken to hospital for
observation, while the other 22
received bumps and bruises to
the head and arms, attended to
by 11 Red Cross units dispatched
to the scene.
The accident occurred at 7pm,
when train number 89 was leaving
the Estación del Pacífico in
downtown San José, hitting a bus
who, according to witnesses,
failed to come to a stop at the
train crossing.
The train was headed west to
Pavas. Carlos García, a
passenger on the bus, said that
the driver did not obey the
railroad crossing markings and
appeared not to have heard the
train's whistle blow. "Luckily
the train was moving slow", said
García who was thankful that he
was not injured.
