Cuba in Numbers
Up to 95.5 percent of Cuban
homes throughout the island have
electricity, of them 99.6
percent are in urban areas,
according to the latest Census
figures made public Saturday.
The National Office of
Statistics (NOS) revealed
results of the 2002 Census, the
third carried out since 1959 and
the 18th in the history of Cuba.
The NOS report confirms that
Cuba has 11,241,291 inhabitants,
50.03 percent of them men and
49.97 percent women. They live
in 3,534,327 houses at an
average of 3.16 per home, and
99.8 percent of the housing
units are private.
Of the Cuban active labor force,
22.9 percent has a professional
degree, and 61.3 percent are
women.
75.9 percent of the total
population is found in urban
areas, 54.5 in cities of over
20,000 inhabitants and 39.4 in
cities of over 100,000
inhabitants.
Havana City, Holguin and
Santiago de Cuba are the most
populated provinces of this
Caribbean country.
The Census shows a relative
balance in sex, and concerning
age, the Census showed a 14.7
percent of people were over 60
years-old, while the average age
of the population is 35.1.
The 2002 Census included 99.83
percent of houses and 99.77
percent of people.
