Nicaraguan Health Workers
Threaten Strike
Nicaraguan health workers warned
they would go on a general
strike until the government
gives them a larger budget for
salaries and medicine purchase
for hospitals.
Health Workers Federation (FETSALUD)
Secretary General Gustavo Porras
said that work stoppage would
start November 17.
“If the budget approved by the
National Assembly on November 22
meets our approaches, the fight
is over,” asserted the leader.
Porras clarified the strike
organized by FETSALUD was
independent of doctors, who also
demand wage improvements, life
insurances plus access to
housing programs.
As the physician´s protests are
scheduled for next week, the
country´s health system could
collapse because only emergency
cases would be seen.
FETSALUD leader Iris Montenegro
said the health battle not only
aims at solving workers
situations but resolving medical
supplies.
Porras added that money to
double funds for buying
medicines could be taken from
budget of the Republic
Presidency and Vice Presidency
social spending.
