Church Asks Pacheco to Veto
Immigration Law
Since the legislature approved
the changes to the Ley General
de Migración y Extranjería two
weeks ago, president Abel
Pacheco rejected the request by
presidential candidate Oscar
Arias to veto a part of the new
law.
Now, Monseñor Ángel San Casimiro,
who is president of the Comisión
Episcopal de la Pastoral Social-Cáritas
de Costa Rica, is doing the
same.
Casimiro says that the
Conferencia Episcopal has been
asking for a "human face" to the
law during the 18 months it took
to approve, saying that there
inconsistencies and
constitutional questions about
the law.
Arias spoke out that the law
would lead to abuses. Casimiro,
however, talks about the
hardship that the new law would
cause for many, and that the
government should have
alternatives for many illegal
foreigners who has set roots in
the country.
