Hurricane Season Almost Here
The most devastating hurricane
to affect Central America in the
last decade was Mitch, when in
October of 1998, in
Honduras, 3 million people were
affected, 243.000 homes
destroyed and damage surpassed
us$10 billion dollars.
This season, between 12 and 15
tropical storms will hit the
region of which seven are
expected to be hurricanes, two
of which will affect Costa Rica.
The first hurricanes will be
named Arlene, followed by Bert,
Cindy, Dennis and Emily.
Costa Rica will see indirect
results of these storms, with
strong winds and rain than in
past years. The Comisión
Nacional de Emergencias is
getting ready for the hurricane
season which officially gets
underway on June 1.
The U.S. Agency for
International Development
Tuesday said it has begun
preparing for the upcoming
hurricane season in Latin
America and the Caribbean.
The agency said a team of
advisers based in San José,
is now ready for immediate
deployment throughout the region
as meteorologists expect
above-average hurricane activity
between June 1 and Nov. 30.
USAID also said relief goods,
including medical supplies and
clean water, are ready to be
sent off from Miami to any
country that is hit by a storm.
