Raids on Retailers by Tax Police
For Non Payment on Duty on
Imported Merchandise
La Policía de Control fiscal del
Ministerio de Hacienda -
the tax police - began an
investigation some six months
back following charges that the
personal importation of perfumes
and other cosmetic items, like
creams and deodorants, were
actually commercial importations
with destination to various
businesses in San José with the
import taxes paid.
Yesterday, Hacienda agents
raided at least five different
retailers in the area known as
"la Coca Cola" and confiscated a
large quantity of merchandise
valued at more than ¢60 million
colones (us$127.000 dollars).
Hacienda agents said that they
will continue their operations
in the coming days, with more
raids and confiscations.
Now, the job falls of the
Ministerio Público which will
determine if the retailers, who
presumably purchased the goods
from the importers, will face
criminal charges.
