Peru's ex-army chief gets 8
years in jail for corruption
Peru's former army chief Nicolas
de Bari Hermoza Rios was
sentenced to eight years in jail
on Monday for corruption under
ex-President Alberto Fujimori
10-year rule.
Prosecutors had sought a 15-year
prison term for the retired
strongman, who is already in
jail for allegedly amassing an
illicit fortune of 22 million US
dollars.
Fujimori, who ruled the South
American country in 1990-2000,
is facing multiple criminal
charges in Peru. Japan has twice
rejected Peru's extradition
request, arguing that Japanese
law forbids the extradition of
the country's citizens.
Fujimori, 66, holds dual
Japanese and Peruvian
citizenship.
Vladimiro Montesinos, Fujimori's
spy chief and a
behind-the-scenes power broker,
has been serving a 15-year
prison sentence for various
corruption convictions.
Prosecutors also called for
sentences ranging from three to
35 years for former army Maj.
Martin Rivas, former head of the
National Intelligence Service
Julio Salazar Monroe and 50
other defendants.
