Banana Growers Fear Losses
A decision by the U.S. banana
firm Chiquita Brands place at
risk the selling abroad of 8
percent of the Costa Rican
banana production, some 8
million boxes.
If that fruit is
not exported, the growers in
some 15 independent plantations
in the Caribbean
province of Limon would lose $43
million, and that would endanger
also the 4,000 direct jobs and
10,000 indirect ones that their
activity produces.
Chiquita
claims that it will have a
surplus 13 million boxes this
year, so it will not buy them.
Firm representatives asked why
Costa Rica would sustain the
heaviest blow, since other
countries would share the other
5 million, they claimed that
this is so because this country
is "more competitive".
