Parents Should Talk to Their Children About Sex, Study Shows
Do parents talk to their children about sex? Do they know what worries their children about sex? According to Laura Hall, of the Programa Persona Joven, "if the children don't have guidance from their parents, they think what they think is normal, such as teen pregnancy".

"Parents rarely talk to their sons and daughters about sex, because they don't know how to", added Eduardo Sanabria of the Persona Joven in Turrialba.

In a recent study done by the Universidad de Costa Rica and with the support of the Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas (United National People Fund), adolescents in Costa Rica have poor sexual education. The study furthers reveals that children who are not part of the formal school program are even worse off when it comes to learning about sex.

According to Patricia Salgaso of the Fondo de Población, children not enrolled in school run a higher risk, not learning about protection against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.

Statistics show that each day 40 adolescents get pregnant in Costa Rica.

The study shows that parents should take the time to talk to their children frankly and openly about sex. They need a strong tie to family and values, added Salgado.
