Tico Appointed to the U.S.
National Academy of Science
Over three decades of dedication
to research, teaching, and
opening spaces for Costa Ricans
to practice state-of-the-art
science, have earned Tico
molecular biologist Pedro Leon a
well-deserved appointment to the
United States National Academy
of Science.
The members of the Academy are
chosen as an acknowledgement to
their distinguished original
research, and it is one of the
top honors a scientist can
strive for.
Currently, over 2,000 U.S. and
350 scientists from around the
world are part of the
prestigious institution, 190 of
whose members have earned Nobel
prizes.
Dr. Leon, who is the current
director of the Costa Rican
National Center of High
Technology, is the second
scientist from this Central
American country in being
appointed to the Academy; the
first one was Luis Sequeira, a
researcher at the University of
Wisconsin Madison, who has been
a member since 1980.
