Slight Recovery For President
Pacheco
More Costa Rican adults are
satisfied with Abel Pacheco,
according to the Barómetro
Iberoamericano de Gobernabilidad
released by CIMA and API Sigma
Dos. 52 per cent of respondents
approve of the president’s
performance, a six per cent
increase in a year.
Pacheco - of the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC) - was
elected in a run-off in April
2002 with 58 per cent of the
vote. Issues such as alleged
contributions by foreign
entities into his campaign fund,
as well as his moral support for
the war in Iraq, had affected
his approval rating.
Corruption was named as the
biggest problem with 32 per
cent, followed by the economy,
unemployment and public safety.
Pacheco cannot seek a
consecutive term in office.
Former head of state Óscar Arias
Sánchez of the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN) has
topped recent voting intention
polls.
The presidential election is in
February 2006.
