Legislators With New Regulations
on Alcohol Consumption
Come Monday, the country's
legislators will have their
consumption of alcoholic
beverages at public functions
regulated. The regulation comes
into effect on Monday following
today's publication in the
official newspaper La Gaceta.
Carlos Herrera, former secretary
of the Legislature and a deputy
with the Movimiento Libertario
said, "we cannot fall into
sublime and ridicule in
attending international
dignateries by serving them soft
drinks."
The regulation stems from a
recent charge by the Partido
Acción Ciudadana (PAC) that in
the last year 320 bottles of
wine (173 white and 145 red),
along with 173 bottles of
whiskey, 43 bottles of rum and
23 bottles of vodka were
consumed at various events,
receptions and dinners attended
by legislative deputies.
The new rule on the consumption
of alcohol pretends to bring
reason to the events and apply
cut back measures in these tough
economic times. Alcohol
consumption will be strictly
limited to "official" public
functions as designated by the
president of the Legislature.
The regulation also will permit
a traditional toast on May 1 and
to dinners and toasts offered by
the president of the Legislature
to international diplomats and
committees.
