Lightning Knocks Out Power for
More than One Hour in San José
A great part of San José was
without electrical power
yesterday afternoon between 2pm
and 3:15pm due to a lightning
strike that hit the transmission
line La Caja-Colima.
Service was disrupted at 1:54pm
and restored to most of the
areas affected by 3pm in the
Metropolitan area and by 3:15pm
to the western areas of San
José.
According to Salvador López,
director of the Centro Nacional
de Control de Energía del ICE,
the lightning strike was of a
high intensity that the system
could not resist, as with a
common lightning strikes.
Some areas as far away as Límon
and the Zona Sur were affected.
Reports of loss of power also
came in from Naranjo and San
Ramon.
Luis Fernando Alvarado,
meteorologist at the Instituto
Meteorológico Nacional (IMN),
said that the areas of Heredia
and Alajuela were hit by heavy
rain and thunderstorms, which
moved to the northern and
western areas of San José.
Alvarado added that the storms
are part of the seasonal changes
that are underway.
