President Pacheco Makes His
Annual Report
In in speech to the
Legislative Assembly yesterday,
President Dr. Abel Pacheco de la
Espriella, said that Costa Rica
will face a "crucial year"
during his last year of
administration. As is custom,
the President gave his annual
report to members of the
Legislature, in according with
the country's constitution.
Pacheco spoke for almost an
hour, detailing most his
government's achievements for
the past year and left the
legislative deputies with a
document which had a complete
list.
The President took the podium
shortly after 7pm following the
election of the Directorio
Legislativo. In addition to
Pacheco's presence in the
Legislature were members of the
Supremos Poderes, diplomats from
various embassies, religious
leaders and invited guests.
"We are in an election year and
at the same time in a crucial
time for the present and future
of Costa Rica. This public
servant will not interfered in
the electoral process not only
for the constitutional
prohibition but also for
personal conviction... This time
the electoral process will not
interfere with the heath of the
country's finances..." were
words spoken by President
Pacheco.
The President touched briefly on
the problems faced by his
government during his
administration, not only
terrorism, wars and global
economic problems, but also his
government had to face
corruption at home, adding that
problems faced in the past year
has allowed Costa Rica to
strengthen.
"The work ahead is not only the
responsibility of the President,
the Ministers and heads of the
institutions, it is work that is
the responsibility of all,
including the members of the
Legislature, and even though
there are only 12 months left
until the elections, there is
time to do much in Costa Rica",
President Pacheco told his
audience.
According to the President, the
greatest challenged his
administration has faced is
facing the poverty problem, the
work to get more families out of
poverty.
The President touched on the
urgency for the approval of the
Plan Fiscal (Tax Reform), saying
that his government has had to
scrape the bottom of the barrel
to find the resources to meet
the social needs of the people.
