Beauty Salon Front for Brothel
A beauty salon was the front for
a prostitution ring run by two foreigners who would supply male, female
and transvestite prostitutes to clients for about ¢20.000 colones
(us$42) for an hour, according to information by the Viceministra de
Seguridad Pública (MSP), Ana Helena Chacón.
According to the Unidad Contra la Explotación Sexual (UCES) - Sexual
Crimes office - the beauty salon was located near the Banco Nacional de
Costa Rica in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, a few hundred metres east of
the San Pedro Mall.
Two Colombians identified only by their last names, Suárez and Medina,
are believed to be running the operation and though they have not been
apprehended by police, one of the two have a date with the Fiscalía de
Delitos Sexuales, while the other is being sought by police.
The beauty salon was without signage, but painted in a showy colour that
offered more than a cut and blow dry and advertised in local print
newspapers offering "massage" services.
Viceminister Chacón said that important evidence was collected at the
scene to tie the operation to the suspicion police had that sexual
services were being offered at the location, following an investigation
by the UCES for the last six months.
Police say that two suspected of running the operation moved frequently
and changed their home phones to avoid being captured.
To date this year, the latest operation is number nine for the year.
Eight were placed in the hands of the Ministerio Público with various
sexual crimes. Three of them are currently in preventive detention
(jail) while the other five are on conditional release. One of the
accused is an American citizen who is accused of sexual relations with a
minor.
