¢1 Million Fine For Selling Liquor
Come Midnight on Thursday until 6m Saturday morning the sale of alcohol in Costa Rica is completely suspended. Bars and cantinas and any establishment that sells alcoholic drinks will have their doors sealed by the Fuerza Pública officials. As well supermarkets and other establishments that sell beer, wine and liquor must close off those areas that sell the product or be fined.

In the past the Fuerza Publica has had problems with the enforcement of the "dry" law that comes into effect each year during Semana Santa.

Constitutional court challenges, Municipalities giving special permits and discreptencies over fines have made the chore a difficult one, until the publishing of the regulation 18 on January 25, 2002 in the official newspaper La Gaceta.

Based on Ley 8190, establishment who break the seal placed by the officers of the Fuerza Pública can face a fine of ¢1 million colones (us$2.150 dollars) and can face the possibility of losing their liquor license completely.

Come Wednesday night, the Fuerza Pública will have the chore to visit every bar and cantina in their area and place a seal on the doors or bars and cantinas and the liquor cabinets and beer and wine coolers of restaurants.
