Banana Exports Drop 16%
The first four months this year,
Costa Rican banana exports
decreased by 16 percent
- equivalent to some us$30 million -
as compared to the same period
in 2004, according to the
Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER).
The sources said
that sales of the fruit abroad
amounted to $188 million
January-April 2004, but were
only $158 million the first four
months in 2005. Sector sources
blamed weather as the major
source for the reduction, even
though they do not omit the fact
that the selling by Chiquita
Brands in East Europe markets,
at lower prices, had also a lot
to do with the downward trend.
