Taiwan Blamed for "Finning"
A report from the Government of
Japan discloses that some 120
boats from Taiwan engage in "finning"
sharks in Central America,
including Costa Rica, Mexico
and, more recently, in Pakistan
and India.
According to the
report, the illegal operation,
consisting in cutting the fins
of sharks and discarding the
rest of the bodies, has
diminished the populations in
Central America to such degree
that the Taiwan fleet has
resorted to developing it in
countries such Pakistan and
India since last year.
Costa
Rican environmentalists explain
that the population of sharks in
this country decreased by 60
percent between 1991 and 2001,
as a result of finning; in the
last 90 years, the drop reaches
90 percent, they add.
