Fidel Castro Stresses Social Impact of ALBA Games
Cuban President Fidel Castro said the 1st ALBA Games will pave the way for social programs contrary to the money-oriented today’s sports world.

The head of state led Friday’s opening of the Games in this city where he stressed on Cuba’s opposition to Pro sports, and called to foster amateur physical activity as a bridge towards human fulfillment.

Fidel Castro criticized those who profit from the effort and talent of professional athletes, a dirty business that encourages the consumption of drugs ans steroids.

The Cuban leader assured these Games will make true a dream of Latin American friendship and integration, and expressed confidence on its positive impact in consolidating friendship among fraternal countries, specially in the field of sports.

"Let’s show the world with these Games that sports can and should be a clean scenario for competitions to promote wellbeing, health and recreation for our people," encouraged the Cuban head of state.

The President also underlined his wishes for these Games to become one of the first evidences of how much the generous and joyful ALBA initiative may contribute to the quest for better Latin sports.

Cuban legendary ex Volleyball player Mireya Luis, member of the International Olympic Committee Athlete’s Commission, also highlighted the need for sports free of monetary or commercial interests.
