Child Labour Force More than
100.000 Strong
A report by local television
station Teletica reports that
there are more than 100.000
child workers in Costa Rica.
According to figures released by
the Organización Internacional
del Trabajo (OIT), Costa Rica
has 113.523 workers between the
ages of 5 and 17, most working
to help out the family.
That figure represents 10.2% of
all children in the country.
Rural areas are more common to
have children working at an
early age. The Brunca region in
the south part of the country,
especially in the Golfito and
Corredores communities, children
are also sexually exploited
and/or used in the drug
trafficking.
The OIT says that 44.2% of the
child labour force work in
agriculture, hunting, fishing
and forestry. Commerce and
Industry - hotels, restaurants,
factories, etc. - employ 26.6%
of child labour.
The OIT says the worst part of
all of this, is that 43.7% of
the children who work don't get
paid.
