Renowned US biologist murdered
in Colombia
A renowned US biologist staying
for decades in Colombia has been
murdered recently in the western
city of Cali, a local university
where he had worked said Monday.
Michael Alberico, 68, a tropical
fauna and bat expert, died from
bullet wounds after he was shot
by two suspected robbers beside
an automated teller machine in
Cali Saturday, said Del Valle
University.
The scholar obtained his Biology
PhD from the University of
Illinois, the United States,
with several papers on New
Mexico desert ecosystems before
he arrived in Colombia in 1979
to study tropical forests.
He then became a zoology
professor at Del Valle
University of Colombia where he
had been working for two decades
training young scientists.
Alberico also led many research
projects on the fauna in
Colombia and other neighboring
countries.
In recent years he had been on
the advising committee of the
Alexander von Humboldt
Biological Resource Research
Institute, a subsidiary of the
Ministry of the Environment of
Colombia, and organized a census
of the country's biodiversity.
