Costa Rica Has Become an
Important Bridge For Drug
Traffickers
Costa Rica has become a bridge
for the movement of drugs
between South and North America.
Most of the illegal drugs moving
and in and out of Costa Rica end
in the United States, or at
least that is the intention of
the drug runners.
In various operations by Costa
Rican authorities during the
first seven months of this year,
more than 4 tonnes of cocaine
has been seized, almost double
of the 2.200 Kg confiscated
during the year 2004.
The biggest single hit on the
drug trade came on April 24,
when 2.550 kilograms worth some
us$40 million dollars was
discovered on the shores of the
Caribbean coast south of the
town of Limón.
Last Sunday, police seized 550
kilos of the white powder,
detaining three suspects,
opening the door to 7 raids
yesterday.
According to police officials,
the sea has become the principal
method of transporting illegal
drugs. And though most of the
narcotics bypass Costa Rica,
some remains for local
consumption.
