Street Vendors Vow To Take Back "Their" Streets Today
Street Vendors vow to take back their streets in San José, following being removed by the Municipality last January, making them promises which have never been kept.

With road blocks on Avenida 10 in front of the "Muni" - San José's municipal offices - to make their voice known, Street Vendors then moved onto Avenida 1 in the centre of San José, the place where they were forcibly removed seven months back.

The Municipality had promised them the old registro building which is currently being occupied by the Ministerido de Seguridad. The Municipality had said that they would renovate the building to accommodate the Street Vendors with a formal market similar to what was done several years ago to the northern side of downtown, the Paso de la Vaca market on Avenida 9.

The Municipality says it is waiting for the transfer of ownership to it from the Registro Civil which needs a decree from Casa Presidencial, which has yet to occur.

The protests and roadblocks on Wednesday were intermittent, however, the Street Vendors say that they will take back their streets starting today, at any cost.

Municipal officials say they will not let that happen.
