Head of top Mexican drug cartel believed nabbed: official
Mexican authorities believe it may have captured Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, one of the country's most wanted drug lords and alleged leader of the Juarez cartel.

Agents quietly arrested the man on Saturday at Perisur, a Mexico City shopping center.

He identified himself as Joaquin Romero Aparicio, but Mexican officials said they expected DNA tests to reveal his criminal identity.

"Right now, it is likely Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, but it isn't completely confirmed," presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said.

Drug leaders often use false names and change their appearance to avoid capture.

If the arrest is confirmed, it would be a blow to the Juarez cartel, the only drug gang that hasn't had a top leader arrested amid a nationwide crackdown.

Carrillo Fuentes' brother, Amado, led the cartel until 1997, when he was believed to have died during botched plastic surgery.

Based in the grim border city of Ciudad Juarez, the Juarez cartel is a confederation of clan-like crime families who smuggle Colombian cocaine and locally grown marijuana to the United States, according to Reuters report.

In its heyday in the 1990s, the cartel used a stripped Boeing 727 passenger jet to haul tons of cocaine north, earning Amado Carrillo the gangland tag of "El Senor de los Cielos" or "Lord of the Skies".
