Accident Leaves Three
Seriously Injured
Three people were seriously
injured yesterday when a Toyota
pick-up truck violently slammed
into a Toyota minivan over the
Rafael Iglesias bridge over the
Rio Grande just northwest of the
turn off to Grecia on the
Bernardo Soto (Interamerican)
highway.
The accident left both vehicles
destroyed.
Sent to hospital in delicate
condition was 34 year old
Cristian Fernández, while Julio
Vásquez Araya, 40, Alicia
Fernández, 35 were in serious,
but stable condition. Ana Isabel
Castro, the fourth person
involved in the accident
suffered just scrapes and
bruises and didn't need to be
taken to hospital.
According to witnesses, the
accident was caused when the
pick-up decided to "gun it" full
speed on the straight bridge
when it hit the van head on.
The accident occurred shortly
after 3pm and back up San José
bound traffic to the Naranjo
toll booth station and
northbound traffic to the
Cacique plant. The northbound
traffic slowly moved through the
Grecia turn off, but southbound
traffic was completely stopped
for more than 90 minutes.
Police say that excessive
speeding contributed to the
accident but are not discounting
alcohol may have also been a
factor.
Traffic along the highways was
high as many are taking
advantage of the good weather
and the holiday season.
