Hondurans Want Election
Results
Honduran parties, especially the
traditional political
organizations, exerted pressure
on the Supreme Election Court (TSE,
in Spanish) Tuesday to demand
results.
While 10 percent of votes have
still to be counted, both the
governing National Party and the
opposition Liberal Party urged
the TSE to resume the suspended
vote counting, issue a final
report and proclaim a winner in
the November 27 elections.
According to official
preliminary statistics, the
liberal candidate, Manuel Zelaya,
has won more than 915,000 votes
(49.90 percent) and has an
advantage of 68,000 votes (3.74
percent) over the nationalist
candidate, Porfirio Lobo, who
has won 846,000 votes (46.16
percent).
It was also reported that the
remaining votes were shared by
the minority parties Democratic
Unification, Democratic
Christian and Social Democratic
Innovation and Unity.
It is quite curious that
preliminary reports from the TSE
do not mention void or blank
votes, nor the abstention rate
that independent media estimate
at 40 percent, in a country
where voting is mandatory.
