Father and Son in Jail Over
"Crime of Passion"
Twenty years jail each is what
the Tribunal de Juicio de Limón
ordered for Gazo Pérez (father)
and Víctor Pérez (son) for
hacking a man, Sebastián Gómez
Picado, and then setting him on
fire by dousing him with
gasoline.
The sentence was upheld by the
Sala Tercera of the Supreme
Court after the men appealed
their sentence following their
trial.
According to court records, the
elder Pérez found his wife in
bed with Gómez and in a rage
committed the crime of passion.
His son learning of the
unfaithfulness of his
step-mother, decided to help out
his father, to get him out of
the jam, and found himself
behind bars as well.
The elder Pérez had been
confronted by gossip that his
wife was cheating on him. The
day of the murder, Pérez left
for work as usual but then
decided to pay his wife a
surprise visit. Her lover tried
to run and with a machete in
hand tried to assault Pérez who
overtook the man. The younger
Pérez came to his father's aid
and tied wounded Gómez and
poured gasoline on him.
The sentence followed the charge
of "homicidio calificado"
- first degree murder.
