Almost 1 Million Dogs in Costa Rica
Costa Rica, according to some estimates, has a population of some 935.000 dogs or one for every four people. The estimate is that 1/3 or some 300.000 are street dogs, dogs that are left to roam the street without supervision.

Costa Rica also counts with an estimated 260.000 cats.

The Ministry of Health commemorated yesterday the fifth year of the work of the McKee Project in Costa Rica, whose mission has been to effectively eliminating the number of unwanted and abandoned animals through Aggressive Companion Animal Population Control Campaigns.

The McKee Project is comprehensive, cost efficient, socially responsible and humane solution for street animals. It is ambitious and innovative in its approach. Its goal is to relieve pain and suffering through a national spay and neuter program, while simultaneously creating responsible owners and responsive communities through education. Latin America doesn’t have the resources for shelters.

In the past five years, the McKee project has been successfull in neutering 20% of the dog population, with the hope to reach the goal of 70% in near future.
