Inflation 13.61 Percent
The cumulate inflation for the
12 months that ended in March
- when consumer prices in Costa
Rica went 0.83 percent up - was
13.61 percent, the second
highest peak in the last 7
years, after it reached 13.78
percent in September 2004.
The
increase in the prices of food,
bus fares, and fuels accounted
for last month's increase,
according to the National Bureau
of Statistics and Census, which
measures inflation based on the analysis of 264 basic goods and
services.
As a result of the
behavior of inflation the first
quarter this year, Central Bank
president Francisco Gutierrez
admitted that it is unlikely
that the country attain the goal
of a 10 percent inflation for
the year 2005, which the bank
had announced as part of its
economic program for this year.
Private consultants set their
estimates at no lower than 11.5
percent as the overall inflation
for 2005.
