American Tourists Left Without Passports and
Money in La Fortuna Break In
Thieves lest eight American
tourists without their passports, money, cameras and other personal
items on Friday, who were visiting the small town community of La
Fortuna de San Carlos.
The group chose to stay at a "hospedaje" - an informal hotel - operated
by a man identified only by his last name Casto, in the centre of town.
According to the police report, the group left the inn to go out for
dinner and found on their return that the room had been broken into. It
appears that the thieves made their way into the room by removing the "celosías"
- the horizontal window slats commonly used in many windows in Costa
Rica - and were able to enter the room.
The group told police that they had about us$5.000 plus credit cards in
their belongings.
The Fuerza Pública in La Fortuna say that this is the third time the inn
has been broken into and registers as break in number 52 for the year in
the district, which sees many tourists each year.
