President signs Constitutional Amendment declaring Costa Rica a “multiethnic nation”

August 26th, 2015 (ICR News) Costa Rican president Luis Guillermo Solis signed an amendment to the country’s Constitution on Monday evening declaring Costa Rica to be a “multiethnic and multicultural nation” during an emotional ceremony at the National Theater.
The first article of the Costa Rican Constitution will now read, “Costa Rica is a democratic, free, independent, multiethnic and multicultural republic.”
President Solis, who himself is the grandson of an Afro-Costa Rican woman, described the amendment as a “historical act of justice.”
“This important step recognizes Costa Rica as the cradle of many cultures and ethnicities, which have enriched our country and will continue to do so,” Solis said on Monday.
Bills supporting the amendment had spent 15 years in the Legislative Assembly. Legislators finally approved the latest bill in June.
Despite Monday’s constitutional amendment, the Constitution still defines Costa Rica as an officially Catholic nation.
